Born in the Dominican Republic and later raised in Paterson, New Jersey – Freddy Curiel is a force to be reckoned with!
Curiel realized his love of boxing at a young age. That intense love kept him focused, off the streets and into the gym where his dedication paid off, beginning his amateur career at 14 years of age.
From the start, Freddy had an amazing career with a record of 35-4. He quickly won State Championships, The Golden Gloves title in 1993 and brought home the “Outstanding Fighter of the Tournament” Award.
In 1994, at the age of 19, Freddy decided to take his career to the next step by turning profssional. In his first professional bout against Roberto Sierra, Freddy fought hard and steadfast to take the win. Freddy soon followed that victory by winning 12 consecutive fights, not to mention defeating Abraham Buruno in the 1996 match at Madison Square Garden, NY.
Then in 1998 Freddy was challenged to fight Hector Camacho for the North American Boxing Organization Welter Weight Title (NABO). Freddy suffered a devastating loss. Feeling discouraged, the fighter left the ring to focus on his family and start a business.
After 4 years however, the call of boxing became too great for the fighter and he decided it was time to dust off his gloves and get back into the game. Fortunately, the Mark Burnett production “The Contender” gave Freddy the chance to show the world he was not ready for retirement. Within a short time, Freddy showcased his immense boxing skills and quickly became a fan favorite. In one of the most watched bouts of the season, Freddy fought Steve “2 Pounds” Forbes. Tough, competitive and versatile, Freddy battled Forbes fiercely, but in the end it was Steve Forbes who took home the trophy.
On “The Contender” finale card, Freddy fought Arron Torres which proved to be one of the most exciting fights of the season. Weathering all 13 rounds, Curiel emerged the winner by unanimous decision.
Since appearing on the show, Freddy has fought Ross Minter and Fontaine Cabell scoring a TKO with both opponents. In his latest bout, Freddy faced Sven “White Warrior” Paris. After going all eight rounds, Freddy was defeated by a tight split decision.
Freddy once stated that God gave him the “freedom to choose” and he chose boxing. Lucky for boxing fans, he did just that. |
