Cornelius “K-9” Bundrage was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. As his alias suggests, Bundrage has a reputation of being a dog inside the ring, mauling his opponents with ferocious combinations and vicious uppercuts. In spite of this, those who know Bundrage well, find him outside of the ring as a lighthearted and exuberant personality who loves to just see people happy.
As an adolescent, Bundrage would occasionally get into fights on the street. He later parlayed his talents into a boxing career at the age of eighteen. He fought briefly as an amateur before turning professional at age twenty-one in 1994. In 2005, Bundrage won the United Boxing Association (UBA) Intercontinental Junior Middleweight title and boasted an undefeated record of twenty-one wins, including thirteen knockouts. Several months later, however, Bundrage experienced his first defeat when he fought a undefeated prospect. It was the stuff of highlight reels with both fighters knocking each other down in round one.
On “The Contender” Season II premiere, K-9 who was spurred by Michael Clark’s trash talking, called Clark into the ring needing to prove his worth as a contender. After four rounds the score was even, however; in the fifth round K-9 landed a big right sending Clark down. From that moment, Bundrage silenced the talk, beating Clark by unanimous decision becoming the first contender to choose his fate in the second round of bouts.
Cornelius has said that he “is like a magician in the ring” and those tricks were used in the Contender Finale to dominate Norberto Bravo for the Bronze medal match-up. In the seventh round, Bundrage won by TKO claiming the coveted prize.
In 2007, Bundrage faced many competitors - both here and abroad. First, Bundrage was pared against Chris Smith in Tacoma, WA. Going the distance, Bundrage was declared the victor by split decision. In March, Bundrage was given the opportunity to fight the British fighter Colin McNeil for the UK vs. USA challenge in Liverpool, England. By the seventh round it was over as Bundrage won by TKO, ultimately helping the USA win the challenge and bringing home the trophy. The next fight was against the tough Joel Julio at the ESPY awards in Hollywood, CA. Given only a two week preparation for the bout, the ill prepared K-9 was knocked down in the eighth round by a series of right hooks and jabs. Unwavering from that defeat, Bundrage fought Nelson Manchego in October scoring a TKO in the fifth round improving his record to 27-3-0.
March, 2008, Bundrage faced former IBF light middleweight champion Kassim Ouma. From the start, Bundrage used is might and powerful right hand against the tough and nimble Ouma. During the 4th round, both fighters brushed against each other giving Bundrage a cut above his left eyebrow. Undeterred, Bundrage continued the attack and went the distance by scoring a unanimous decision over Ouma.
Bundrage is married to Shawana and has a six-year-old son named Dashaun.
